PIVOT IS A NETWORK WHICH BRINGS TOGETHER THE BEST ELEMENTS OF HIGH SCHOOL, POST-SECONDARY EDUCATION AND INDUSTrY TO DELIVER AN INNOVATIVE GRADE 9–12 EDUCATION MODEL
Today, every company uses tech, regardless of sector. Talent is critical in driving business success, and the immediate demand requires multiple strategies involving education, training and experience. This challenge is typically addressed in one of two ways: buying existing talent or investing in local growth.
While direct foreign recruitment eases the pressing need for experienced tech professionals today, we need innovative ways to develop a sustainable path for home-grown talent. With women representing only 27 percent of the local tech sector, and approximately a 12 percent youth unemployment rate, in Manitoba, Pivot will provide opportunities for growth and inclusion - a win-win for all.
Pivot aims to onboard five tech focused high schools by 2022. Each school will give students a head-start on their careers by providing access to advanced-level training in a dedicated environment over their high school tenure.
The first tech-focused school in the Pivot network is Pembina Trails Early College. Grade 9 and 10 students participate in robust programming in Cyber Defense & Networking and Software Development at their division campus at Smartpark Innovation Hub in Winnipeg. Through grade 11 and 12 thee students pursue their post-secondary tech studies at the Manitoba Institute of Trades and Technology (MITT) where they specialize in one of two streams: Cyber Defence & Cloud Administration or Software Developer.
Pivot collaborates to connect students to industry. Pivot coordinates support from our network through professional mentorship and internship opportunities, providing students invaluable experiences with our workplace partners.
